Breast Augmentation in Baton Rouge

Breast Augmentation also called Augmentation Mammaplasty is a surgical procedure of placement of either saline or silicone implants beneath the breasts. This can give a woman who has small or uneven breasts or has lost breast volume after pregnancy a fuller, firmer and more proportioned appearance. There are many Breast Augmentation Options:

Implant Size

One of the most important decisions related to Breast Augmentation surgery is deciding upon the final desired breast size. The final result will be determined by your own breast size, the shape of your breasts, your body type, and the implant type and size.

It is often difficult for woman to visualize what the appearance of their breast would be with enlargement to a particular size. Because every woman is unique, a great effort is made to show my personal results of a large number woman with different breast sizes, shapes, heights, weights and body stature. The same size and type of implant may appear different dependent upon these variables.

This is combined with the placement of various sizes and styles of implants within the bra at the time of consultation. This has provided the most accurate guide to determine the implant style and size that will give you the appearance you desire.

Implant Type

Saline-Filled Breast Implants

Saline-filled breast implants are filled with a saline solution that is similar to the fluid that makes up most of or body. The implant is usually inserted into the breast pocket unfilled. Once the implant is placed it is filled to the desired size. An advantage of the saline-filled implant is that the size of the implant can be adjusted as needed. This is often important when there are differences in breast sizes.

Silicone-Filled Implants

Silicone-filled implants were re-approved for Breast Augmentation and Reconstruction by the FDA in 2006. The major problem with the silicone-filled implant that had caused investigation was unrecognized rupture, leakage and capsular contraction. The new cohesive silicone implant has been developed to correct these problems. For woman with very little breast tissue, the silicone implant will feel softer and more natural compared to saline-filled implants.

Implant Style

Dr. Williams uses a round smooth surface type of implant. It has been found that if the implant is able to move and not become entrapped in the pocket or space in which it has been placed, then the breasts will remain soft and natural. The smooth surface allows this movement.

The three different styles of implants are: high profile that will provide the greatest projection, moderate profile with medium projection, and low profile with the least projection. The particular style used will depend upon your personal goals.

Implant Placement Options

Most implants are placed in a pocket or space behind the Pectoralis Muscle. Contraction and movement of the muscle causes the implant to move in this space and this prevents contraction around the implant.

Some women may prefer not to have the breast implants placed behind the muscle. The implant will then be placed behind the breast tissue over the muscle.

Incision Options

All incision are made to provide the smallest and least noticeable scars. Each of the incisions listed below has advantages and disadvantages. These will be discussed in detail.

Periareolar – around the lower portion of the areola skin junction

Inframammary – in the skin crease beneath the breast

Transaxillary – in the armpit

Recovery

Breast Augmentation is painful to most women because of breast swelling and tightness of the muscle over the implants. Because of this, the larger size implants usually results in more postoperative pain. Pain medication and a muscle relaxer is given during this initial postoperative period.

Most patients are able to return to work within the week.

You will be placed in an elasticized “sport” bra in surgery. It is important not to wear an underwire bra until advised to do so since this tends to push the breast implant up and out of the lower breast pockets.

You will also be shown and advised about implant massage to ensure that the implants remain in the proper pocket placement.

Follow up appointments are scheduled to ensure that you have the result that you desire.
