Surgery for Breast Augmentation

Dr. Williams understands that every woman’s body is different. Beginning in 2018 Dr. Williams uses Virtual Reality-4D imaging. This technology is unlike anything else because it creates an environment where you can see yourself with Breast Augmentation. This technology allows you to be placed in a virtual environment to see your breast with different types, styles, and sizes of breast implants. This allows you to determine what is best for your desired result.

Implant Types

Saline-filled breast implants.

These implants are filled with saline solution. This is the same fluid that is in our bodies. Saline implants have the advantages of being adjustable in size. This type of implants has the advantage of adjusting the size of the implant if your breasts have different sizes. These implants are placed in position within the breast and then filled to the desired size.

Silicone- Gummy Bear Implants

The new breast implants are filled with a non-liquid silicone called a cohesive gel. This cohesive gel is a soft solid (like a Gummy Bear candy) rather than the previous liquid silicone. The new Gummy bear implant even when cutting in half like the candy will not leak silicone. This new silicone implant fixes the previous problems when liquid silicone would leak from the implant. The leakage of liquid silicone was one of the major causes of capsular contraction - breast hardening.

Implant Styles

Dr. Williams uses a smooth surface round implant that allows for natural movement of the implant within the breast pocket.

Dr. Williams offers a variety of Style Options.

  • High Profile, providing the most projection and less implant width
  • Moderate Profile, providing medium projection and medium implant width
  • Low Profile, providing least projection and greatest implant width

Implant Placement

Dr. Williams most often places the implants in a space behind the chest muscle.  This is called Sub Pectoral. In certain individual preferences, the implants can be placed on top of the muscle behind the breast tissue.  There are certain Pros and Cons for each.

Incision Options

All incisions are made as small and as least noticeable as possible.

  • Peri areola - an incision at the junction of the areola and skin
  • Infra-mammary - an incision in the lower skin fold or crease of the breast
  • Trans-axillary - an incision in the armpit

Recovery after Breast Augmentation

A skin Glu sealant is placed on the incisions.  This allows you to shower the next day. A special bra is placed to reduce swelling and keep the implants in proper position.  This is worn for about four weeks after surgery. Patients can resume normal activity a few days after surgery. Doing push-ups and chest exercises are avoided to prevent the muscle from displacing the breast implants.

Planning Your Procedure

The procedure is performed at the Plastic Surgery Center. This is performed in a nationally accredited (AAAASF) surgical facility. This ensures that the surgery is done in complete privacy and that it is done with the highest quality of patient safety standards for ambulatory surgery. Prior to surgery, all cases are reviewed in conjunction with Dr. Williams and Anesthesia. Depending upon your present health and the type of procedure planned it may be necessary to have lab work done prior to surgery.

Dr. Williams will discuss with you and give you instructions for before and after your surgery. The surgery is outpatient surgery. That means that you will be able to go home after the surgery. It will be necessary for you to have a caregiver with you for 24 hours after your surgery.  This is to ensure your safety and that all necessary post-operative instruction are followed. If you do not have a caregiver, arrangements can be made for this. Dr. Williams understands that patients and their caregivers often have anxiety, concerns, and questions after surgery. Dr. Williams is always available 24 hours a day to respond to you. Every effort is made throughout to make certain that you have a great experience and that you obtain your best possible desired result.

Costs of Breast Augmentation

The cost of Breast Augmentation depends upon the type of breast implant selected. Because of the years of research that has been required to develop the new cohesive silicone gel-filled or “Gummy Bear” type of implant, the cost for this implant is greater than that for a saline-filled implants. The average cost for Breast Augmentation with saline-filled implant is about $4,500.00 and that for silicone gel-filled implants is about $5,500.00

Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Augmentation

Why Choose Silicone Gel-filled Implants or Saline Filled Implants?

An important consideration of the decision for choosing silicone or saline filled breast implants is the amount of breast tissue coverage. If there is very little breast tissue present the breast implant will be more readily palpable and may also be more visible. The silicone gel-filled implant feels more like breast tissue and gives a more natural appearance than the saline filled implant.

Another consideration is if there is an asymmetry of the breast size. One breast may be larger than the other. Silicone gel-filled implants are only available in set sizes of 25-35 cc increments. Matching asymmetrical breast sizes with silicone implant may therefore be difficult. A saline filled implant can be filled to the size needed to achieve optimal breast size symmetry.

Breast Augmentation or Breast Lift?

Breast Augmentation enlarges the size and fullness of the breasts. Breast Augmentation will not lift the breasts or nipples if there is significant laxity and drooping. A Breast Lift is necessary to raise and lift low and sagging breasts and nipples. A Breast Lift and Breast Augmentation is often done at the same time to achieve the best results. The options about this will be fully discussed at your consultation with Dr. Williams.

What Is the Life Expectancy of Breast Implants? When Do I Need to Replace My Implants?

Breast implants are not expected to last for the rest of your life, whether silicone gel-filled or saline-filled implants. It is likely that you will need additional surgery over the course of your life. Changes can occur to your breasts over time that could require additional surgery. This could involve implant replacement, removal and or revision surgery. The average life expectancy is about 15 years.

If a saline implant leaks or ruptures it becomes apparent usually within a short time after a leak or rupture. There is a change in the size and fullness or shape of the breasts. The saline that leaks out of the implant is absorbed by your body without any harm.

The newer silicone implants have a cohesive linked semi solid silicone gel. You may not be able to tell that a rupture of the implant has occurred. There may not be a noticeable change in your breasts. The best way to diagnose a problem with the silicone implant is with an MRI. This does not squeeze the breast and does not use x-ray radiation. The FDA recommends to have an MRI of the breasts 3 years after the Breast Augmentation and then every 2 years. Breast implants do not have to be replaced unless there is a problem with the implant.
