As a result of aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight loss it is common for the breast to lose firmness and shape and develop a sagging appearance. The breast tissue and the nipples droop below the lower crease of the breast. Often the breasts develop a pendulous appearance and there is a loss of fullness of the mid and upper breasts.  A Breast Lift -Mastopexy raises, and re-shapes the breasts to restore your breasts to a perky and youthful shape

Your Consultation with Dr. Williams

Dr. Williams feels that the most important part of the consultation is to listen to you and understand what you want to achieve.  During your consultation, Dr. Williams will discuss with you and explain the procedure and your expected results. Each of the possible options for the surgery will also be explained.  Depending upon your goals, alternatives, as well as additional procedures, may be recommended. The goal is for you to be fully informed so that you are confident that the choice you make is the right one to give you the result you want.

Candidates for Breast Lift

  • The breast are sagging and drooping with the nipple and or breast tissue below the breast crease
  • The breasts have a pendulous appearance
  • The nipple point downward

Surgical Technique of Breast Lift-Mastopexy

Dr. Williams offers a variety of Breast Lift procedures depending upon each woman’s particular needs. He discusses each procedure, the relative indications for each and expected results. Some factors that determine what type of Breast Lift procedure to be performed are:

  • Amount of sagging and laxity of the skin and breast tissue.
  • The amount of excess skin
  • The position and size of the areola
  • The size of the breasts and the amount of breast tissue

Dr. Williams performs the following types of Breast Lifts:

Peri Areola and Circum-areola Mastopexy ie “Doughnut Mastopexy”

The incision is limited to the outer circumference of the areola. This procedure is to elevate the nipple\areola and or change the size or shape of the areola

“Lollipop or Keyhole Mastopexy”

The incision is around the areola and another vertical incision from the lower edge of the areola to the lower breast.  This is best for moderate sagging of the breasts. It lifts the breasts and lifts the nipple\areola

“Anchor” or Inverted  “T”

The incision is the same as the Lollipop and in addition, has in an incision in the lower breast crease. This procedure is when there is a large amount of excess skin and sagging of the breasts. It removes excess skin and tissue and lift and elevates the breasts and reshapes the breasts.

Recovery of Breast Lift

Skin Glu is applied to the incisions so you can shower the day after surgery. You can resume normal activity within a few days but to avoid vigorous physical activity using your chest muscles for about 5-6 weeks.

Planning Your Procedure

The procedure is performed at the Plastic Surgery Center. This is performed in a nationally accredited (AAAASF) surgical facility. This ensures that the surgery is done in complete privacy and that it is done with the highest quality of patient safety standards for ambulatory surgery. Prior to surgery, all cases are reviewed in conjunction with Dr. Williams and Anesthesia. Depending upon your present health and the type of procedure planned it may be necessary to have lab work done prior to surgery.

Dr. Williams will discuss with you and give you instructions for before and after your surgery. The surgery is outpatient surgery. That means that you will be able to go home after the surgery. It will be necessary for you to have a caregiver with you for 24 hours after your surgery.  This is to ensure your safety and that all necessary post-operative instruction are followed. If you do not have a caregiver, arrangements can be made for this. Dr. Williams understands that patients and their caregivers often have anxiety, concerns, and questions after surgery. Dr. Williams is always available 24 hours a day to respond to you. Every effort is made throughout to make certain that you have a great experience and that you obtain your best possible desired result.

Frequently asked Questions about Breast Lift

Can I have Breast Augmentation Instead of a Breast Lift?

If your nipple and or breast is below the lower crease or fold of the breast you will need a Breast Lift. Breast Augmentation places the implant at the level of the lower breast crease. The nipple and or breast tissue below this crease will not be lifted by the implant. The nipple and breast tissue will remain below the crease without a lift. Breast Augmentation can be done at the same time as the Breast Lift to increase the size and fullness of the breast.

Does a Breast Lift Change the Size of the Breasts?

A Breast Lift does not change the size of the breast. A Breast Lift raises and elevated the breast and the nipple areola. The size of the areola if enlarged is often reduced in size. Excess skin is removed to reshape the breast to give a more youthful appearance. I you wish to have increase size and fullness of the breasts a Breast Augmentation may be done in conjunction with the Breast Lift

What Are the Scars of Breast Lift?

The scars fora breast Lift depend upon the type of Lift performed. There are tow major types of breast Lifts. One is the vertical Limb or “Lollipop Lift” that places in incision around the areola and an incision from the lower edge of the areola to the lower breast crease. This procedure is for woman that have a small to moderate amount of breast sagging. The second procedure is the “Anchor” or “Inverted T” Breast Lift. This has the same incision around the areola and the vertical incision from the lower edge of the areola to the breast crease. In addition to that there is an incision in the lower breast crease. This triangulated area of the lower breast crease often results in small separation of the skin edges that may require a scar revision.

So that all of these incisions heal well with the least possible scar Dr. Williams performs a smoke test on all patients having this surgery. Nicotine causes a constriction of blood vessels and a decrease blood flow to the tissue. This will result in lack of adequate wound healing with wide and elevated scars. Because Dr. Williams wants you to have the best possible result and minimal scars the Breast Lift surgery is not performed if the smoke test is positive.
